"When I couldn't find anyone in my circle
of friends who wanted to go white-water rafting with me, I started
Women Traveling Together."
Debra Asberry, Founder
"That was more
than
10 years ago... and since then I have realized my dream to go white
water rafting on the Colorado River with 14 other women. We had a
wonderful time! "
That's the short version of our
history. The long version goes like this. Debra Asberry began
acquiring her background and skills to run Women Traveling
Together by living overseas for three years. Returning to the
US, Debra rose to a marketing director position in the
airline industry, and continued to travel (mostly solo) all over
the world. In 1993 she left the airline industry to start her own
marketing and consulting business, including a 60,000 circulation
magazine in the Washington DC/Baltimore MD area.
In 1996 Debra began to transition her
business focus from consulting to travel, believing that women
wanted an alternative to solo travel. Using the magazine she
owned, Debra polled her readers and generated the initial interest
in Women Traveling Together. The magazine was sold in 1997 and
Debra turned her undivided attention to developing the company.
In February 1999, Debra asked Hazel
Cannon to join WTT and handle membership relations and
domestic trip planning so that she could concentrate on growing
the company. With the help of Hazel and several other individuals
now working for Women Traveling Together, the company has grown and acquired national
recognition.
Women Traveling
Together is incorporated and headquartered in Maryland with a
second office in South Carolina. WTT currently
schedules about 30 trips a year. The company's on-going goal is to
increase the number of travel destinations we offer each year, as
well as increase the services we offer.
